Retaliation

Well, I was up early this morning, despite the attack on my intestines, at 5 AM this morning. I'm not sure what caused it but Shelagh and I both felt icky.

Before I get into that intriguing topic, I wanted to bitch about something that happened to me yesterday involving a major grocery chain in the area.

I did all my shopping and waited an inordinate amount of time, for there only being 2 people in front of me, with about 10 items each. When the cashier asked the customer what green onions were, I knew I was in trouble. He didn't even seem that new to the job, just extraordinarily apathetic. Anyway when he finished up my payment he must have left the last bag hanging on the packing rack because I got home with one less bag of groceries.

So, no worries, I'll just call them up, I'm sure the bag is still there and buddy probably already passed it in at the customer service counter. Long story short, I spoke to 4 separate people with no lead in by the previous, I had to repeat myself 4 times to reach the last person saying basically, sorry it isn't here, tough shit.

So I hung up and sat for a minute, pretty peeved about what just happened and cranky about getting the run around. I decided, I was definitely not going to take no for an answer and stormed back off to the grocery store, determined to get my bag of groceries.

It took me no longer than 5 minutes to get there and I walked directly to the customer service counter and politely said, I left a bag of groceries here with these items in it and I wish to pick it up. I explained that I tossed my receipt but pointed out the cashier. She said, oh yes, we found that bag and here is a list of everything in it, logged here in this journal, if you can read the handwriting, you can go grab it, otherwise I'll get the guy who logged it all and it will only take a moment and you'll be on your way.

I'm sure your thinking the same thing I was, why the hell did I speak to 4 different people to be told, to bad so sad, to walk into the store and have my problem solved in less time than the call took. This is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned and they will surly be receiving an informative e-mail from me later today.

Retaliation Part 2

Whatever I ate yesterday that made me feel the aforementioned ickyness, is still lingering in my system and making me feel terrible. So I thought about what I ate yesterday and oddly enough for lunch, I decided to grab a junior donair from Pizza Town on my way home from groceries.. The reason I say it was odd is because latter that evening as I was glancing through a newspaper, I saw and article about donair meat being unsafe for consumption and the whole industry is under scrutiny.

I worked as a pizza cook for about 6 years and in that time, I consumed a lot of donair meat and I never got violently ill from it. This is a hot debate going on now in Halifax, which has donair meat almost on every corner. I don't eat donairs very often anymore due to high cholesterol so I honestly wouldn't miss them if they were gone. I guess it could hurt local business but there are many ways to make sure donairs are safe to eat and can be as simple as cooking the meat on the grill before serving it. Basically, I don't think it was the donair but I guess I can't be sure.

The only other thing I ate yesterday was the Presidents Choice Chinese Combo meal. Due to the fact that the rice and vegetable side had either peanut oil or fish sauce in them, (I'm still at a loss for why vegetarian rice needs peanut oil in it or why vegetable noodles need shrimp juice, my wife Shelagh is allergic to both peanuts and Seafood) we only purchased the Sweet and Sour Pork main dish and the General Taos Chicken main dish and grabbed a steamed rice and a couple veggie spring rolls at a local establishment.

I love good Chinese food and eat it as often as my budget allows and General Taos Chicken is one of my favorites so I was really excited about this one, especially after yesterday's success . I cooked them both by conventional oven instructions, which usually tends to be the best results. The Sweet and Sour Pork was definitely better than the General Taos Chicken which was pretty flavorless. As impressed with the Indian Selection as I was, I was equally unimpressed with the Chinese one.

Both meats were reasonably tender but the sauce dried out quite a bit during cooking and the edges of the meat was a little over cooked and chewy. The green and red peppers were soggy and disgusting and the Sweet and Sour Pork only had 4 small pineapple chunks in it. Overall This was a pretty unimpressive meal to the point that I will not purchase it again or recommend it to anyone.

So my suspicions are that either the combination of the donair and Chinese food made my insides retaliate or it was just one or the other, the fact that Shelagh felt Icky after we both ate the Chinese food leads me to believe it was indeed that and not the donair. However the effects of tainted meat can delay up to 7 days before symptoms arise so indeed it could be the Donair. Knowing that also means it could have been something I ate several days ago.

I can't place sole blame on anything specific, so no angry letters from Presidents Choice Lawyers or The Donair Association, please, I have insinuated nothing.

Let me make this clear though , I don't recommend these dinners because of their flavor and texture not because of the possibility that they may or may not have made me ill.

Lesson learned today is, in my opinion, don't purchase Presidents Choice Chinese Combo main dishes and if you do, don't precede it with a donair.

Redundancy and Forgetfulness

Redundancy

I just got up a half an hour ago and I figured I would poke around at filling out the rest of my profile and throw up a picture until I realized that Blogger only allows you to post a picture that is already hosted on the web, so now, I have to post the picture here and switch to Html to get the posting Url and only then, can I have a picture on my profile. So here it is...

Me

Forgetfulness

I forgot to mention yesterday that we tried the new Presidents Choice Combo Meals. There are three types as far as I can tell so far, which are Indian, Thai and Chinese. We opted for the Indian because Shelagh was in the mood for Butter Chicken.

So the deal is you pick a main dish, a rice side dish, a vegetable side dish and an appetizer and it's considered a full meal. The main dish is about 4 bucks and the rest are about 3 bucks, so for about $13 plus tax you can get a full meal for 2. I was skeptical because I am definitely a food connoisseur, a fresh food lover and usually shy away from processed or frozen foods but I gotta say, this was one tasty meal!

As I said, we got the Butter Chicken for our main dish, Pilau Rice for a side and decided to get the Vegetable Samosas with Memories of Punjab sauce for an appetizer so we decided to skip a vegetable side. So we payed about $10 plus tax for a meal for 2 and it stuffed both of us.

The rice was perfect and only took about 4 minutes in the microwave, it had a "may contain peanut" warning because of the cashews, so Shelagh was risking it, as she is deathly allergic to peanuts. (Don't worry we took the appropriate precautions) It also contained pea's.

The Butter Chicken was a very tender and tasted like actual chicken, it took about 8 minutes in the microwave. Incidentally, this main dish comes with an incredible amount of sauce and if you added one or two fresh cooked chicken breasts cut in pieces, into the sauce, you could easily feed 4- 6 people.

The Samosas were beautifully spiced, wrapped in crispy phylo pastry and took about 18 minutes in the oven. Not very greasy at all.

The one extra special part about this meal was the Memories of Punjab sauce that came with the Samosas, it was absolutely delicious, although I did find that it drowned out the flavor of the Samosa if you dipped to heavily, but it was hard not to because of its delectable flavor.

Let me just say at this point that I've eaten a lot of amazing Indian food in my day and I'm talking the homemade, my grandmother from India made it, style Indian food and obviously this comes no where near it but for a commercial, frozen dinner, I think these dinners are well worth their affordable price, very delicious tasting, with no "microwaved" flavors or textures and it more than filled up our bellies, if we had gotten the additional side that is recommend we would have been bursting at the seams. A good value in my opinion and a quality tasting food.

Shelagh and I both really enjoyed this meal and are excited that it is pay day today so we can try one of the other assortments. I'll let you know how they are lol...

Procrastination

Well, I guess this is my first official Blog and I mean ever.

I just finished filling out my profile and it must have taken about an hour, I have a hard time dissecting myself, trying to provide all my interests and favorite this and that's. I did the best I could for now and I guess I'll just procrastinate as usual and do the rest later. I suppose the fact that I am sitting here in my underwear still not showered, at two in the afternoon is a testament to today's blog title.

I'm pretty much your typical story of a guy that has raw talent but little drive, money or direction. I'm kind of an "intellectual buffet"* picking and nibbling at whatever interests me never really picking anything specific to define who I am, which doesn't really bother me as much as holds me back. It has it's advantages when doing IQ tests but it hasn't really taken me anywhere monetarily and when asked what I do, I can only answer with Artist. I guess I'm a creator of my own perceptions of the world around me.

Today I'm just plain lazy and I'm filling out my blog stuff so I can stall even longer, it's a lot more fun than housework. I don't mind housework but it does get a bit stagnant as I guess work must be for my wife Shelagh. I probably don't need to state the obvious but Shelagh graciously supports us both, while I try to create a lucrative income with my art. I used to be a cook but unfortunately the extraordinarily erratic and long hours I became frustrated and decided to develop my artistic talents. Thanks to Shelagh, I am able to do so.

If you would like to visit my wife's blog you can find her link on my main blog page, called "The Adventures of Shelagh". She is doing some documentation of our attempt to move to Nunavut. I'll leave the Nunavut information to her because she is extremely excited about going and much more knowledgeable. I myself am not a fan of the cold but the move will be good for our financial situation and as an artist the cultural experience will be unmatched. I am however, a fan of small communities, survival and isolation so I'm pretty excited about that part of it. Anyway take a wander over if you want to read more on our possible move to Nunavut.

Shelagh

Shelagh and her mother at the beach when she was about 8 years old. I gave it to her for her birthday a couple years ago. It took approximately 10 months to complete, as I was extremely new to acrylic painting. It was the first portrait and second painting I ever created.

Well I guess I've procrastinated long enough and I should get some housework done and try to get in an hour of painting at some point before supper. I'm not sure how often I will be posting but I will probably post more of my work in time and possibly some of my poetry.

Not bad for a first blog ever I guess...
